Transition Bikes revamps 2009 Covert bike

Transition Bikes re-defines ‘all-mountain’ genre with an all new Covert.

Moving forward into a new realm of design, Transition Bikes has completely revamped the existing Covert all mountain bike to create a new 6” travel quiver-killing bike capable of more aggressive riding. The new Covert sports a refined frame at the same weight as the old model, but is significantly stronger. The new frame comes in at a respectable 6.7 lbs without rear shock, and builds up to a 28-32 lb bike made for efficient long days in the saddle.

2009 Transition Covert


At the core of the Covert is a completely new proprietary tubeset designed by Transition Bikes. The new tubes create a stronger frame with better contact points for welding shock mounts, pivots, and the headtube. In addition to the new tubes Transition has created a one piece CNC’d rocker link to increase stiffness and strength, as well as new dropouts and chainstay/seatstay yokes. All these new features not only add to the aesthetics of the bike but increase strength while shedding weight.

2009 Transition Covert rear linkage


Rear suspension is handled by the Fox RP23 large volume or DHX 5.0 Air. The shock rate on the Covert is slightly progressive with only a 2.8% change throughout the stroke. This allows for consistent feel throughout the travel and allows for easy tuning and setup of the shock. As the Covert goes through it’s travel, the leverage decreases slightly and allows the natural progressiveness of the air shock to ramp up and soak up large bumps and hits. This also gives the bike excellent small bump sensitivity and feel at the top of the stroke while allowing the rider to use the travel without a harsh bottom out.

Alongside the Covert’s structural refinement, the geometry has progressed to be modeled around a 160mm singlecrown fork, such as a Fox 36 or RockShox Lyric. The new geometry maintains the all mountain roots of the old Covert which was very climb friendly and nimble, but gets slackened out just a bit to make room for the larger fork without raising the BB. “Geometry and fit is everything in a bike and that is why we didn’t change the geo and sizing too much on the Covert. We really felt like we hit some perfect numbers on the Covert and our customers loved it. On the re-design we made sure to maintain that magic fit and feel that we loved about the bike,” says Kyle Young, owner of Transition Bikes.

“When we released the Covert we were really going for a lightweight all mountain only frame but soon found our customers putting larger forks on the bikes and pushing the limits of the design. Most of these customers are people that can only have one bike but love to pedal singletrack and also hit more aggressive freeride trails. They needed a bike that could handle both. Our solution was to make the Covert work for both worlds without the weight penalty. The reality is that mountain bikes are expensive and while most riders would love to have a full quiver of bikes, they can only afford one bike that needs to do everything,” says Kevin Menard, owner of Transition Bikes.

Hammerschmidt compatible


Additional features include internal chainstay cable routing which is super easy to setup and change the housing and a tapered headtube which allows for excellent weld contact for the top and down tubes as well as providing lower stack heights for the handlebar and fork. Transition Bikes will also be releasing a headset for sale with the frame for both tapered and traditional 1-1/8” steer tubes.

Transition plans to be shipping the Coverts by early June, just in time for prime riding conditions.

 I picked up my new Covert a few days ago. f*cking amazing. its got a single ring freeride build and a talas 36, 31 lbs. by far the most fun bike ive ever ridin i jump on it and take it down anything you can imagine, ive been doin shore style trails on it no problem and it still climbs as well as ill ever need and comfortable for all day rides.

I DEFINENTLY recoment this ride for anyone interested

 Wow! looks awesome, versatility to the max! I must say you guys at Transition are gettin better at what you do. First that new DH proto and now this, designs are evolving beautifully! Killer trail by the way, is that near Bellingham somewhere?

 Why is everyone hating on tapered headtubes? They look great and are probably also stronger than the normal. I really don't get it

 Because now we have to worry about trying to find yet ANOTHER size to fit our bikes. And the normal headtubes work fine. And these just look sketchy to me.

 You don't have to use a tapered steer tube fork; you can run a standard 1-1/8" fork. Our options for headset include tapered 1-1/8" to 1.5", or 1-1/8" to 1.5 reduced to 1-1/8" just by switching the crown race. It's the ultimate in versatility really. Another advantage is that you have the option of using a 1-1/8" cup INSIDE the 1.5" bottom of the head tube, which reduces fork height if you want.

 it says its not a anythign bike but u can do downhill on it.... i wud liek to see that happen the bike looks like a xc bike its sooo skinny.... i wudnt use it for anything over am definetly not free ride and downhill! i dont like it at all!

 Looks almost identical to my Devinci Hectik, with some improved gusseting.
I like the beefy headtube and gusset, top shock mount boxed in (where most of the flex of my Hectik seems to take place) and the internal cable routing is clean.
Nice bike, i can vouch it can do almost everything.

 It's very similiar to the Hectic, the angles are really becoming an industry standard for the all mountain group.

 Recently sold my BR and ordered an El Guapo yesterday. Now I'm thinking maybe I should have waited just one more day!!! Been wondering why Tranny didn't make a boys version of the Syren and now I know Smile

 The new model surely looks better than the old one...not doubt about that...and I guess the "color" shown here is actually RAW so with some normal paint it'd look tons better...I also think that this bike shortens the range between itself and the preston, even tho the preston looks a lot burlier.

 sick bike, transition has really been steppin it up with their bikes, and i love the song choice, finally radiohead getting more love. i thought i was the only one who listened to radiohead for biking

 I looked at these seriously last year for the exact reasons that Transition built this one. Had last year's been this refined and had the 67 degree front end (running a Lyrik) I would be on one instead of a Norco. Of course I'd have to see how it pedaled relative to the 4 bar...

With an adjustable 6" fork, a 67 degree H/A at full travel is the ideal all round front end for PNW (North VAn, Whister, Squamish etc).

I love these new breed of longer travel 30ish lb trail bikes. Much is owed to the 6" fork manufacturers, of course, but they truly do allow you to get by well with one bike.

 Great bike, It's just a pity that the video shows kind'a trail riding only , some serious ripping section would be good for promo purposes. I'm sure this bike is capable of high speed or super technical stuff. These bikes should teach people that you can do 99% of serious stuff and you get the uphill/mobility benefit with a minimal loss of peformance/durability.

as far as Hammerschmidt is concerned, i'll wait till shimano or raceface, makes something similar.

Reminds me ALOT of the titus EL GUAPO and mono lights but thats a good thing.

 He's riding Sumas Mountain in Abbotsford. Knob Gobbler , Noah Fear etc. I like the full seatube and general design and would ride it if it can be built under 30lbs.

 El Guapo costs almost double the covert so its silly to even compare them. Also coverts HA is slacker which is always better for a more "freeride" oriented bike

 It looks NICE. Nothing new, cheap version of SCBlur or Devinci? Would I buy it? Depends on price tag. Looks nice so does ipod and other gizmos, why not, maybe...

 your so ignorant. i bet you have never pedaled more than 13 miles. if you are riding xc or AM a seat that high is a HUGE benefit. but its people like you that give DH'rs a bad name. i come from both sides and see so often XC hating on DH and vise versa.
